PLASTIC WHEEL HUBS ARE PRONE TO EXPLOSION
The Strick Injury Law and Mediation have seen a rise of hand-truck and wheelbarrow injuries in Marin County. It has been reported that, within recent years, there have been many people hurt in California by exploding wheels. At least eight different plastic wheel hub consumer products accounting for approximately 1.5 million units have been recalled due to the danger of wheel explosion during inflation. Attracting little notice, hand-truck and wheelbarrow tires are causing injuries and trips to the emergency room. Manufacturers including Union Tools, Harper Trucks, Gleason and Ames True Temper have all received reports of injuries when plastic wheel rims break and explode when over inflated.
The reports have noted that the wheel hubs explode with the force of a hand gun causing an serious injury. Weaknesses in the plastic make the hubs particularly vulnerable to explosion when consumers use an air compressor to fill the tires. Injuries include broken facial bones, loss of sight in one eye, contusions and lacerations.
